Coronavirus symptoms update: Two early warning signs known as the dark horses of COVID

The deadly novel coronavirus continues to strike fear in many. Almost daily we are bombarded with new information about cases, infections and symptoms being reported. It has just been revealed the United States of America president, Donald Trump, and his wife Melania have been struck by the virus. Experts urge it’s crucial to know about the early warning signs of COVID-19. Now scientists have discovered the two early warning signs which have been called the “dark horses of COVID-19 symptoms”.

Researchers from King’s College London have warned about several “surprising” symptoms that could be early warning signs of coronavirus.

They have been conducting work to spot early signs in a bid to help stop the spread of the virus in the months ahead.

Symptoms dubbed the “dark horses of COVID-19 symptoms” are early warning signs of a possible infection and include headaches and fatigue.

Disorientation, confusion and severe shortness of breath were reported in those aged 65 and over.

Now the researchers have created a list of the most common symptoms reported by patients in the first week after onset.

They have done it using data from the COVID Symptom Study app.

The researchers said in a statement: “We have been busy researching what the early symptoms of Covid-19 really are, as this information is essential to helping us all stop the spread of the virus in the coming months.

“If we can spot cases based on symptoms sooner, people will be able to start self-isolating in those first few days and stop the accidental spread of the virus.”

Most common symptoms

The data from the research revealed that headaches and fatigue are the most commonly experienced early symptoms.

It stated that headaches accounted for 82 percent of cases with fatigue following at 72 percent.

“Only 9 per cent of COVID-positive adults aged 18 – 65 didn’t experience headache or fatigue,” the researchers said.

Headaches are very common and aren’t necessarily indicative of a coronavirus infection.

They usually go away by themselves without requiring any extra treatment but drinking plenty of water and taking paracetamol may help to relieve the pain.

Fatigue, meanwhile, may be caused by a number of medical conditions.

You should consider speaking to a doctor about your fatigue if it lasts longer than a few weeks, and you can’t think of any obvious reason for it.

A high fever, a new cough, and a change to your sense of smell or taste are the most crucial coronavirus symptoms, according to the NHS.

In the UK, you should only get tested for the infection if you develop any of these symptoms.

Some patients have also reported a sore throat, diarrhoea, and even hiccups, on top of the more common signs.

More than 42,000 people have died from coronavirus in the UK with the list increasing daily.
