The UK’s vaccine rollout programme has been widely praised for its success in recent months. More than 31 million people have been vaccinated with their first vaccine dose as of April 5. More than five million people have also already received their second vaccine dose.

When will Moderna be available in the UK?

Over the last few months, only the Pfizer/BioNTech and Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccines have been rolled out in the UK.

The Moderna vaccine was approved for use in the UK months ago, but the first shipment of Moderna vaccines to the UK was not expected until spring.

The first shipments of the vaccine have now arrived and on Wednesday, the first Moderna vaccine was given out in Wales.

Elle Taylor, a 24-year-old unpaid carer for her grandmother, became the first person in the UK to be vaccinated with the Moderna jab.

Ms Taylor said she was “very excited and happy” to be the first in the UK to receive the jab.

Speaking after receiving the vaccine, nitroglycerin overdose she said: “I’m an unpaid carer for my grandmother so it is very important to me that I get it, so I can care for her properly and safely.

“My grandmother has had her first dose and she is going for her second dose on Saturday.”

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said he was delighted the UK rollout of the Moderna vaccine was starting.

He said: “The UK Government has secured vaccines on behalf of the entire nation and the vaccination programme has shown our country working together at its best.”

Wales Health Minister Vaughan Gething said: “This is another key milestone in our fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.”

The rollout will start in England “as soon as possible this month”, a spokesman for the Department of Health and Social Care said, but added that commercial sensitivities prevent further disclosures.
