Homegrown Skincare: Why Australian Natives are Taking The Beauty World By Storm
Australian native plants have been used for centuries by Indigenous communities to improve health and promote wellbeing. Providing hydration, nutrition, pain relief and protection against the elements, Australia’s botanical sources are fresh, effective and – as the nickname The Land of Plenty suggests – available in abundance.
But have we been sitting on a veritable skincare goldmine in Australia when it comes to Australian Native’s skincare potential? We chat to Biologi’s Founder and Cosmetic Chemist Ross Macdougald to find out why Australian Natives are taking the world by storm.
Why are Australian natives so unique?
Many people don’t realise that the Australian landscape actually has more biodiversity than the Amazon and Asia combined. These ingredients are unique because of their potency and potential on the skin.
Many Australian natives such as Kakadu Plum, Quandong, Davidson Plum and Finger Lime have many nutrients in them that make them ideal for potent actives in beauty products. Put simply, Australian Natives are so unique because of their efficacy and versatility, often containing a high amount of ‘active’ nutrients which is the ingredient that is actually beneficial for the skin, changing it on a cellular level.
They’re potent in their effectiveness and offer up a wide variety of uses. Many ingredients found in the Australian landscape are not only incredible for the skin but can serve a host of purposes – from medicinal through to nutritional. These unique characteristics can be harnessed to be effective in improving the skin function when they are delivered in their most potent form.
That’s why Biologi offer these natives in their 100% active and potent form. We don’t add in a whole heap of synthetics or filler ingredients because the plant extracts work incredible on their own.
What are some of the native ingredients we should look for in skincare?
Kakadu Plum
Kakadu Plum
Kakadu Plum is an Australian native plant that has been used for tens of thousands of years by Indigenous people for medicine and as a food source. It’s a traditional source of bush tucker and has been used as an antiseptic remedy for the Indigenous people across the Arnhem Land, proving it’s nutritional and healing properties.
It’s a special skincare ingredient because it contains the world’s richest natural source of Vitamin C. These high levels of Vitamin C found in Kakadu Plum can help to diminish fine lines, pigmentation and redness, whilst increasing the suppleness of skin and inhibiting melanogenesis. This powerful active nutrient also helps skin combat damage from harmful UV rays.
Finger Lime
Finger Lime
Finger Lime has seen a surge in popularity of late, thanks to its potent actives. Finger Lime is a small citrus fruit which has been nicknamed ‘caviar of fruit’ thanks to its caviar like pulp that pops out when you open it.
The Finger Lime is widespread in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales where Plant Extracts facilities are located and a strong relationship with our Finger Lime farmer provides the perfect opportunity for us to use locally sourced fruits and quite literally put them directly into your bottle.
The skin benefits of finger lime make it a very versatile fruit – many varieties of finger lime contain three times the Vitamin C found in a mandarin and more antioxidant content than goji berries!
Quandong
Quandong
Whilst Quandong has been used throughout the ages by Aboriginal communities for its healing and nutritious properties, it is a relatively new ingredient in the skincare landscape that is fast gaining popularity. The potent nutritional content of quandong can strengthen immunity and offers effective prevention and cure for disease.
Containing powerful antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, the leaves, bark and seeds of quandong are all traditionally used as medicine and healing ointments. With every part of the native fruit used to beat illness and provide vital nutrition, it’s no surprise that quandong is becoming just as popular as an ingredient in skincare as it is in food.
When applied topically as a single-plant extract, it protects skin in precisely the same way defending against the sun, pollution and preventing harmful toxins from entering the delicate dermal layer. Quandong is jam-packed with alpha-amino acids that lock in the natural moisture to keep cells hydrated from within.
When used in a serum form, the actives work in synergy with the skin’s natural hydrating processes to leave a complexion bright, dewy and glowing.
Davidson Plum
Davidson Plum
Davidson Plum is a native rainforest fruit of sub-tropical-coastal New South Wales and North-East Queensland. Davidson Plum in its pure form provides a storehouse of vitamins and antioxidants that leaves skin looking refreshed, radiant and luminous.
The natural nutrients in Davidson plum make it able to work with a range of skincare conditions while working with the body’s natural hydrating processes to nourish cells from the inside out to create an even, luminous skin tone. Working to reduce skin blemishes, increase hydration, strengthen skin cells, balance sensitive skin and providing enzyme exfoliation and anti-oxidant protection from damaging free radicals. Biologi primarily source our Davidson Plum directly from a grower in the Byron Bay hinterland making it organic while contributing to the sustainability of local agriculture. The superiority of this product means it doesn’t lose its nutrients when it’s frozen, so Biologi’s supplier also sources the fruit frozen from Queensland.
