Premature menopause, which occurs in women before the age of 40 is possible, but only affects around one percent of women.
The Mayo Clinic states that this is a result of ovaries failing to produce normal levels of reproductive hormones, which can be caused by genetic factors or an autoimmune disease.
For these women hormone therapy is recommended at least until the age where menopause usually develops naturally in order to prevent any long-term damage to the brain, heart and bones.
