Fleetwood Mac: Lindsey Buckingham joins tour in 1977

Singer Lindsey Buckingham has made it to the age of 74 because of advances in medical operations.

Back in February 2019, the musician – who was notoriously fired from Fleetwood Mac the previous year – experienced a heart attack.

Symptoms of a heart attack, as listed by the NHS:

  • Chest pain – a feeling of pressure, heaviness, tightness or squeezing across your chest
  • Pain in other parts of the body – it can feel as if the pain is spreading from your chest to your arms (usually the left arm, but it can affect both arms), jaw, diltiazem retard 180 neck, back and tummy
  • Feeling lightheaded or dizzy
  • Sweating
  • Shortness of breath
  • Feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting)
  • An overwhelming feeling of anxiety (similar to a panic attack)
  • Coughing or wheezing.

Whisked away by the emergency services, Lindsey underwent an emergency triple bypass surgery.

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) clarifies that the operation requires medics to surgically open up the chest.

The BHF explains: “Your surgeon takes a blood vessel (a tube that blood moves through) and attaches it between the aorta (the main blood vessel leaving the heart) and a point along the coronary artery.

“At least one of the blood vessels used as a bypass graft is an artery from your chest called the internal mammary artery.

“Blood vessels such as a vein from your legs and sometimes an artery from your arms are used for the other grafts.”

Lindsey had a triple bypass meaning he required three grafts to nourish his damaged heart with blood and oxygen.

Such a major operation requires significant recovery time (up to six weeks) before a person is well enough to go back to work.

Yet, for Lindsey, it wasn’t only the recovery time that would have set him back from making music.

During the triple bypass, the singer endured temporary damage to his vocal chord.

Once he regained his strength, and the ability to serenade a crowd, Lindsey was struck with another bout of ill health.

On December 30, 2022, Lindsey posted to X (formerly Twitter) about cancelling the last leg of his solo tour earlier in the year.

“A largely successful year of touring was unexpectedly cut short at the end due to challenges with my health,” he posted.

“Happily, my health has returned, and I’ve begun work on a new album.”

In 2023, Lindsey released two EPs, Good As Gone and Don’t Look Down, which are available on streaming services now.
