Bra expert says sports and plunge bras can damage breasts over time

Bra shopping can be a bit of a nightmare as every woman is shaped differently – and we all need different styles, shapes and support.

Plus, knowing your own bra size can also be hard as lots of shops use different measuring systems that sometimes give different results. But, it’s important that you know your correct size.

A badly fitting bra can lead to back pain or discomfort and some styles can actually limit your breast development if you wear them long term. Sounds dangerous!

Apparently, people with bigger chests should limit the amount of time they wear a sports bra or tight tankini.

Bra fitter Olivia Hogan spoke to Tyla and said: "If you have a bigger bust, wearing sports bras every day is definitely not recommended.

"They work by compressing your chest, which over time can damage your breast tissue and affect your lymphatic system".

She continued. "When shopping for bras, look for the ones that have a high centre plate (this is the middle of the bra that joins the two cups together).

"A lot of people shy away from underwire as it is deemed uncomfortable but this only happens when your bra is ill-fitting.

“To get the best support, underwire should encapsulate the whole breast and sit behind the breast tissue".

Apparently, the bra band supports 80% of the weight of the bust and should fit to the body.

When pulled your band shouldn’t come more than an inch out from your chest.

And, it’s not just those with generous curves who should be careful.

People with smaller breasts should apparently avoid plunge bras and choose a balconette style instead due to how the bust sits.

Olivia commented: "People with smaller breasts may find that they aren't able to fill out a plunge bra and there can be some gaping over the top. You won't get the support you need from a plunge bra.

"Balconettes are supportive for most breast shapes as they lift the bust up.”

Not having the right support can cause a bad back, abrasions and chaffing, bad posture and strain the shoulders.
