Chrissy Teigen & Moms Everywhere Are Side-Eyeing Complaints That COVID-19 Tests Are Too 'Invasive'
The age of social distancing has understandably lessened everyone’s tolerance for BS In recent weeks. For Chrissy Teigen and a number of other moms on Twitter, President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence’s comments about how being tested for COVID-19 was “nothing pleasant” and “invasive” were enough to earn some serious “are you kidding me?” energy.
Because, let’s be real: the few minutes of discomfort in order to get access to information that can help keep you, your family and your community safe is pretty much nothing compared to the kind of invasive, body-changing medical procedures involved in any run-of-the-mill childbirth.
True to form, Teigen pulled no punches when it came to challenging those complaints (and @-ing Trump) — and got real about her experience giving birth to her daughter, Luna and what she views as a truly “invasive” medical experience.
“They had to put a garbage bag at the end of the bed to collect my blood before [stitching] me up, where I then had to pee using a water bottle as a pain fountain for 3 months,” she wrote in a follow-up tweet. “So yeah. the swab, I bet it’s super rough.”
According to experts, the test involves a swab of your nasopharyngeal region (where the nose and throat meet), as USA Today reported earlier this year.
“If you were to open your mouth and say ‘Ahh’ and look straight back, that’s the region, right where the respiratory (tract) meets the back of your mouth,“ Kirsten Hokeness, an immunology expert who teaches at Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island told USA Today. “The virus likes to latch on there and start replicating.’’
And, yeah, we’re not in the business of comparing medical matters (everyone’s lives, bodies and experiences are different). But, considering a large-scale concern amid the coronavirus pandemic is access to medical care and testing for the virus (and especially as it becomes apparent that affluent Americans seem more capable of getting those tests), complaints about how fun or not fun the test is are pretty exhausting and tone deaf.
