Hair loss treatment: The plant extract oil proven to improve hair growth
Hair loss can be a troubling sight. Most people don’t want their head of hair to lose its lustre. One plant extract oil may be able to help promote hair growth.
One three-month clinical trial, published in the Dermatology Research and Practice, examined the role a plant extract played in promoting hair growth.
The randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study assessed 60 adult women with self-perceived thinning hair.
For 90 days, women either consumed two placebo supplements or a supplement containing horsetail plant extract.

Each subject continued their normal hair care activities, such as shampooing, conditioning and colour treatment frequency.
The participants also continues their normal diet and exercise regimes.
Digital images were taken of the scalp area, and each subject’s hair was washed and shed hairs were collected and counted.
After 90 days these measures were repeated and the volunteers completed self-assessment questionnaires.
The data revealed that those who had taken horsetail extract had “achieved a significant increase in the number of terminal hairs within the target area”.
This means the researchers noted more hair growth in the scalp area for the women who consumed horsetail plant extract than those who took a placebo.
Additionally, the women who took horsetail plant extract also had less hair shedding when they got their hair washed.
And the women taking the horsehair plant extract reported higher levels of hair growth in the self-assessment questionnaire.
There were no reported adverse events, resulting in the researchers to conclude that horsetail “promotes hair growth and decreases hair loss in women suffering from temporary thinning hair”.
Horsetail
Horsetail is an ancient herb taken from the horsetail plant, known as Equisetum arvense.
Its name is thought to be derived from the plant’s appearance, with its branches resembling the tail and mane of a pony.
Horsetail contains the mineral silica (also known as silicon), known to strengthen hair strands.

Moreover, horsetail contains the mineral selenium, which helps the body process iodine – and iodine regulates hair growth.
Additionally, it consists of potassium, aluminium salts, alkaloids, bitters saponins and aconite acid.
A horsetail supplement is available in health stores. Alternatively, people may feel more comfortable getting straight to the root of the problem.
Bottled horsetail extract oil can bring nutrients directly to the source of hair loss.
For topical application, it’s best to add a few drops of the horsetail extract into your shampoo.
When shampooing the hair and scalp, do so in circular motion and for up to a couple of minutes.
Massaging the head helps to increase blood circulation to hair follicles which, in turn, helps to promote hair growth.
Remember to apply pressure to the scalp to really reap the benefits of a head massage.
