Cases of severe acute hepatitis are being closely monitored in the UK after cases of the disease jumped from 10 to 74 cases in the space of three days. Without treatment, the condition – which causes inflammation of the liver – can lead to liver failure and death. To date, reports show six youngsters have received liver transplants. While the cause of the surge has not yet been identified, scientists are probing possible links to coronavirus.
