Chia seeds are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, rich in antioxidants and they provide fibre, iron and calcium said Medical News Today.
The health site continued: “Omega-3 fatty acids help raise HDL cholesterol, the ‘good’ cholesterol that protects against heart attack and stroke.
“Chia seeds contain 131 calories, 8.4 grams of fat, 13.07 grams of carbohydrates, 11.2 grams of fibre, 5.6 grams of protein and no sugar.
“Eating one ounce or 28.3 grams of chia seeds provides 18 percent of daily calcium needs, 27 percent of phosphorus, 30 percent of manganese and smaller amounts of potassium and calcium.”
Benefits of chia seed water
For such a small food item, chia seeds are packed with fibre and an increase in fibre intake has been shown to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
A review of 67 controlled trials noted that even a modest 10 grams per day of chia seeds increased a person’s fibre intake which reduced LDL, or “bad” cholesterol, as well as total cholesterol.
Recent studies have also shown that chia seed’s dietary fibre may place a role in regulating the immune system and inflammation.
This helped to decrease the risk of inflammation-related conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and obesity.
In a study published in Hypertension, dietary phosphorus and blood pressure was investigated.
The study said: “Raised blood pressure is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide; improved nutritional approaches to population-wide prevention are required.
“Dietary factors for lowering blood pressure include higher intakes of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, fibre as well as calcium and magnesium.
“Our date highlights a largely unrecognised role for increased phosphorus intake which may be a contributor to the achievement of lower blood pressure.”

Chia seeds are said to be exceptionally high in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to work as a blood thinner and may reduce blood pressure.
Leading health experts advise soaking chia seeds in water for half an hour and then consuming the water.
This process can be repeated daily for a month for effective blood pressure lowering effects.
Chia seeds are relatively easy to find in any major grocery store said Medical News Today.
It continued: “They are black in colour and they have a mild, nutty flavour.
“Raw, they can be sprinkled on cereal, yogurt, oatmeal, or smoothies.
“They can also be eaten cooked, added to baked goods like breads and muffins.”
Along with consuming chia infused water, cutting down on the amount of salt used will also have a great effect on your blood pressure reading.
