In a study published in the National Library of Medicine, low magnesium intake and its association with pain in joints was further analysed.

The study said: “As magnesium mediates bone and muscle metabolism, inflammation, and pain signalling, we aimed to evaluate whether magnesium intake is associated with knee pain and function in radiographic knee osteoarthritis.

“We investigated the associations between knee pain/function metrics and magnesium intake from food and supplements in 2548 Osteoarthritis Initiative cohort participants with prevalent radiographic knee osteoarthritis.”

The study concluded that lower magnesium intake was associated with worse pain and function in knee osteoarthritis, especially among individuals with low fibre intake. 

Doctors at Tongji University, Shanghai, China published their research in the medical journal Life sciences on the benefits of magnesium supplements in helping patients with osteoarthritis and improving joint health.

The researchers listed the benefits of taking magnesium supplements for joint health which include:

Magnesium deficiency is considered to be a major risk factor for osteoarthritis development and progression.

Magnesium deficiency is active in several pathways that have been implicated in osteoarthritis, including increased inflammatory mediators, cartilage damage, defective chondrocyte biosynthesis, calcification in soft tissue and a weakened effect of analgesics.

The researchers concluded there is abundant evidence which suggests magnesium supplementation is an effective therapy for osteoarthritis and better joint health.

Magnesium plays an important part in maintaining the health of one’s muscles, as well as in particular processes such as muscle contraction.

If magnesium deficiency is present, problems with muscle weakness, pain and arthritis symptoms may ensue.

A major side effect of low magnesium levels is inflammation which can contribute to aches and pains.
