Gigi Hadid's Secret Weapon Against Morning Sickness on the Runway: Bagels

Most people who have been pregnant have memories of when their “condition” made things rather uncomfortable, or downright awful, and they couldn’t tell anyone why. For most of us, it’s getting woozy in the office, or feeling awkward at a party where everyone’s drinking. For Gigi Hadid, it was being nauseous on multiple runway during a month of Fashion Weeks while all eyes were on her.

Not often do we feel sorry for super models, but we will make this exception. Of course, now it’s all just a funny memory that Hadid shared with fans on Twitter on Monday.

“Yes, I found out the day before the Tom Ford show 🤯,” Hadid replied to a fan who asked if she knew she was pregnant during Paris Fashion Week. The Tom Ford Fall 2020 show was during New York Fashion Week, so she actually had weeks more of runway work ahead of her. “I was so nauseous backstage 😅 but I learned I could kinda control it if I continuously ate, so my mom would pack me snacks before each show 🥖 🧀 bless.”

The logical follow-up question is what those snacks entailed, or what Hadid’s pregnancy cravings were as she carried her baby girl with Zayn Malik. Hadid obliged in detail.

“It went it waves,” she tweeted. “Everything bagels/ extra cream cheese Bagel triple chunk brownies Chocolate bar for breakfast- sourdough toast & tomato olive oil salad w lots of salt and pepper lol … and Z’s ribs w fries French fries. Random.”

We love how completely un-“model”-like those foods are. Maybe Hadid realized this when she added, “Also arugula salads!!!”

But back to more decadent form, she continued: “But during fashion month in Europe it was hard to find bagels, so I ate mostly bread & Dutch cheese. (Except for in London, Taylor gave me bagels.)”

Even with London bagels, provided, we presume, by Taylor Swift, she didn’t have the easiest time of things.

“Backstage at Burberry was the hardest day with the nausea, I remember,” she said. And yet, she managed to look like this.

Last summer, in an Instagram Live, Hadid mentioned being pregnant on the runway. At the time, she said the only visible change she had was a slightly fuller face. “I’ve had cheeks since I was born — especially fashion month, when I was already a few months preggo,”

It’s incredible how women can pull themselves together and power through the demands of pregnancy and motherhood. But here is a reminder to anyone who is pregnant or plans to be one day: You do not need to be a superhero. If you’re feeling sick, it’s OK to sit out an event or a workday, and you don’t need to tell anyone why, other than that you don’t feel good. This isn’t selfishness. When you do this, you’re making it easier for the next person to do the same.
