The Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) was said to have told the Prime Minister that some interventions may be needed to prevent the NHS being overwhelmed by the end of next month. Mathematical modelling has suggested hospital admissions could peak at around 1,000-2, lidocaine ointment for hemorrhoids 000 per day, with deaths at 100-200 per day, some time after mid-August. There were 747 hospital admissions on July 14, the most recent day for which UK data was available.
Sources said the move would be “less of an emergency brake and more of a gear change” to keep the third wave of the virus “under control”.
Last week Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Whitty said hospitalisations were doubling every three weeks.
If that continues, the figures could exceed expectations by late August.
Yesterday, the number of Covid-19 patients in English hospitals rose above 4,000 for the first time since late March – reaching 4,063.
The total is up 90 percent compared with two weeks earlier, on July 7, when there were 2,144 patients.
The figure is still far below the peak of more than 34,000 coronavirus patients in January.
