Asthenia is a medical term for feelings of physical weakness or a lack of energy.

In short, as a result of taking statins, you may feel more tired than usual.

Another side effect is that you may experience an increased frequency in your release of flatulence (farting).

This symptom may also fall alongside two other side effects related to statins that affect your bowel moments.

This includes constipation, the inability to empty your bowels; constipation can also be defined as having fewer than three bowel movements a week.

Contrastingly, you may experience the opposite of constipation.

Users of statins commonly find that they experience bouts of diarrhoea.

These are best identified through your stools being loose and watery and having three or more bowel movements a day.

Alongside these, another common bowel-based symptom is gastrointestinal discomfort.

Statins don’t just affect your bowel movements; patients often experience headaches and nausea.

Furthermore, patients have also experienced myalgia and thrombocytopenia.

Myalgia is a medical term for muscle aches and pains whilst thrombocytopenia is a deficiency of platelets in the blood.

Platelets play a key role in clotting your blood so symptoms of thrombocytopenia may include prolonged bleeding from cuts, bleeding gums or nose and blood in your urine.

The final common symptom of taking statins are sleep disorders such as insomnia and other problems with sleeping.

Alongside these common symptoms there are also uncommon side effects of statins to look out for.

These include Alopecia (hair loss) that causes your hair to fall out in clumps, vomiting and memory loss.

Other uncommon symptoms of statins include skins reactions such as eczema and rashes alongside sexual dysfunction conditions such as erectile dysfunction.

The number and severity of your side effects as a result of taking statins, depends on a number of factors.

This includes the type of statin, best calius substitute the dosage of that statin, the length of your prescription and the effect of other medications you may be taking.

The important thing to remember is that whilst some of these side effects may be upsetting, there are a lot of support groups to help you through the treatment.
