Arthritis diet – the common vegetable you should avoid or risk painful joint symptoms

Arthritis is a common condition that can affect people of all ages, according to the NHS. But regularly adding more aubergine to your diet could help to protect against the condition, it’s believed.

Arthritis pain can lead to a number of debilitating symptoms that patients will want to try and avoid.

The condition can make life more difficult when carrying out simply, everyday tasks.

It’s crucial that if you develop signs of arthritis, you speak to a doctor as soon as possible to try and find a treatment to relieve your pain.

You may be increasing your chances of arthritis flare-ups by eating aubergine, it’s been claimed.

Aubergine could be triggering your arthritis pain as it’s a type of nightshade vegetable.

Some arthritis patients have reported flare-ups after eating certain nightshade vegetables.

These are a type of vegetable that contain the compound solanine.

Solanine hasn’t been scientifically confirmed to make arthritis pain worse, but the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) suggests avoiding them… just in case.

“If you have rheumatoid arthritis, a diet change could help you, and perhaps even eliminate your pain entirely,” said the PCRM.

“In research studies, many people who cut out certain trigger foods find that their pain improves or goes away.

“The reason, presumably, is that certain foods spark inflammation in the joints.

“A survey of more than 1,000 arthritis patients revealed that red meat, sugar, fat, salt, caffeine, and nightshade plants [e.g., tomatoes, aubergine] most commonly worsen the condition. Research also shows that dairy protein may make symptoms worse.”

If you do decide to cut back on the amount of aubergine in your diet, you should consider swapping it for onions.

Onions are one of the best natural remedies for your joint pain, according to the Rheumatology Center of New Jersey, USA.

It has “immune-boosting” properties which specifically help to relieve arthritis pain, it said.

Arthritis patients that eat the very most onions have the fewest number of painful flare-ups, it claimed.

Common arthritis symptoms include joint pain, inflammation, and restricted movement.

There are two key types of arthritis in the UK; osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis to be diagnosed in the UK – around nine million people are believed to have osteoarthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis, meanwhile, is an auto-immune disease that has been diagnosed in about 400,000 individuals.
